Dr. Greg Allgood of P&G is on a mission: to save the lives of children and educate the world about the benefits of clean drinking water.
Every year he travels around the world, distributing PUR packets to people in need, teaching everyone, everywhere how to use this technology to easily turn dirty water into clean, drinkable water helping to prevent illness and save the lives of more children every day.
Dr. Greg Allgood has been working since 2001 with global partners and relief organizations, flying to countries around the world to get PUR packets into the hands of the people who need them. The stories of his journeys and the lives he's touched are incredibly inspiring.
Dr. Allgood joined P&G in 1986. Through his public health efforts, he worked to improve the lives of others. Today, he is the Director of the Children's Safe Drinking Water Program at Procter & Gamble, is a Senior Fellow in the Sustainability organization, and leads P&G's efforts to provide clean drinking water in the developing world.
He has a Ph.D. in Toxicology from North Carolina State University and a Master of Science in Public Health from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, where he did research in the water area. Currently, Dr. Allgood is the chair of the communications and advocacy group of WHO's International Network to Promote Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage and serves on the advisory board of the Aquaya Institute.
Dr. Allgood's travels with PUR really started seven years ago in Kenya, when he showed a local woman how a PUR packet could quickly enable filthy, disease-ridden water to become clean enough to drink.
While talking with the woman, her now valuable bucket of purified water was stolen. The woman got down on her knees in the mud and begged Dr. Allgood for another packet. So he gave her what he had and told her he'd bring more back
Dr. Allgood knew he had to do more to help. Back in the U.S., he convinced P&G to start the Children's Safe Drinking Water Program and turn the distribution of the PUR packet into a not-for-profit project.
Today P&G works with a diverse group of partners - ranging from CARE to PSI to World Vision to USAID - to provide families in developing countries with access to clean drinking water.
To date, Dr. Allgood and his partners have been able to produce more than one billion liters of clean drinking water for children and their families in more than 40 developing nations by using PUR packets to kill viruses and bacteria and remove parasites, dirt and pollutants.
